L.A. COMIC CON, AXS TV AND JEANIE BUSS BRING THE ACTION OF WOW-WOMEN OF WRESTLING TO THIS WEEK’S POP-CULTURE SPECTACULAR

WOW Superheroes The Beast, Havok, Fire, and Faith the Lioness
Will Do Battle at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Oct. 26-28

Los Angeles – October 23, 2018 – Los Angeles Comic Con kicks off its 8th annual show this weekend with the pop culture event’s first-ever live presentation of professional wrestling, featuring Jeanie Buss’s WOW-Women Of Wrestling (WOW).  The ring warriors of WOW, billed as the WOW Superheroes, will battle live on the convention’s main floor Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The L.A. Comic Con convention is a three-day celebration of the best in comics, gaming, sci-fi horror, anime and pop-culture.

“The WOW Superheroes did an incredibly popular meet ’n’ greet at L.A. Comic Con in 2017.  Seeing the tremendous growth of their pop-culture impact, we knew we had to present the WOW Superheroes live in action this year,” L.A. Comic Con CEO Chris DeMoulin said. “We’re so excited, and we know our fans will love this groundbreaking presentation.”

The WOW Superheroes, who debut on AXS TV on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, will first mix with fans on Friday, and those one-on-one encounters will continue through the weekend. These meetings will allow fans to not only get an autograph from some of their favorite Superheroes, but also step into the WOW ring and have their photo taken with them. Scheduled to appear over the three-day event are The Dagger, The Fabulous Lana Star, Keta Rush, Stephy Slays, Samantha Smart, Princess Aussie and Razor, the Vanguard of Violence.

“I’ve loved comic books since I was a little girl, and still read them today,” WOW Owner Jeanie Buss said. “That’s why I’m so thrilled to team with L.A. Comic Con to provide their loyal fans a live experience they may have never witnessed. Can you imagine, Supergirl, Batgirl, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, or She-Hulk stepping through the ropes to battle? No, but our WOW Superheroes will and it’s going to be exciting.”

The live action will begin 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring Faith The Lioness battling The Beast and resume 3 p.m. Sunday, with Fire battling the Monster of Madness, Jessicka Havok. David McLane, the founder of GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) and WOW, will be the master of ceremonies for these matches, and for a Sunday afternoon panel discussion on women’s wrestling, which begins at 2:30, just before the Fire vs. Havok match.

Women’s wrestling is back, with a vengeance. The hit Netflix series “GLOW” is set for its third season, WOW is partnered with reality TV master Mark Burnett, MGM ’s President of Television Group & Digital, to develop new content for WOW, and WOW-Women Of Wrestling comes to TV on January 18 as part of AXS TV’s Friday Night Fight lineup of programming. In short, attendees at L.A. Comic Con are in for a treat.

The 5th annual DWAYNE McDUFFIE AWARD for DIVERSITY in COMICS will once again honor five finalists whose commitment to excellence and inclusion both on the page as well as behind the scenes exemplifies the late Mr. McDuffie’s own career producing entertainment that reflects a wide scope of human experience, created by an equally wide scope of human beings.

The winner will be announced at a reception to be held on February 15, 2019 in Long Beach, CA during the Long Beach Comic Expo and C3: Comic Creator Conference.

I eagerly look forward in this 5th submission season to hearing from an even more varied chorus of creative voices ready to share their own outstanding visions with our world.”
“I wish Dwayne was still with us,” continued Charlott McDuffie. “His voice is sorely missed, especially now. As we go into the 5th year of this award, its significance and impact is more important than ever. I’m excited we can again open the door a bit wider for more diverse creators to have their voices heard.”

“As I reflect on the course of the DWAYNE McDUFFIE AWARD for DIVERSITY, I’m immensely proud of the way the larger community has accepted and embraced the mission. I’m humbled to have been asked to judge this award that honors his legacy.”

Dwayne transitioned into the animation industry as a Story Editor and Writer on the Emmy-winning Kids WB series, Static Shock, which he co-created and for which he won the 2003 HUMANITAS PRIZE. Dwayne was also a Producer, Story Editor, and Writer on Cartoon Network’s Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series, for which he received a 2004 WRITERS GUILD nomination.

With artist/producer Glen Murakami, Dwayne redeveloped Man of Action’s Ben 10 animated series intoBen 10: Alien Force then Ben 10: Ultimate Alien – 98 episodes of what became the global blockbuster (350 episodes and counting!) franchise for Cartoon Network. Dwayne also wrote the animated features Justice League: Crisis on Two EarthsAll Star Superman, and Justice League: Doom, as well as episodes of What’s New, Scooby Doo? and Teen Titans, all for Warner Bros. All New GOON Comic Books To Be Published by Albatross Funnybooks

All New GOON Comic Books To Be Published by Eric Powell and Albatross Funnybooks

Plans Underway to Celebrate the Goon’s 20th Anniversary in 2019
with a National Signing Tour, Collected Editions, Limited Edition Tiki Mugs and More

October 9, 2018) In 2019, award-winning cartoonist Eric Powell and his publishing company Albatross Funnybooks will debut an all new GOON comic book series, featuring never-before-published stories. For almost two decades, the Goon’s whiskey fueled adventures have thrilled fans, critics, and creators with their bold creativity, classic style, and irreverent humor. When Albatross Funnybooks debuts THE GOON #1 next spring, it will mark the first new Goon stories to be published since Dark Horse published THE GOON: ONCE UPON A HARD TIME comics in 2015, and it will kick off a year-long, 20th anniversary celebration featuring a national signing tour, Albatross Funnybooks’ collected editions of classic GOON graphic novels, limited edition GOON tiki mugs and more.

“The fact that we feel confident bringing the full library of my flagship title over to Albatross going into our third year of expansion fills me with excitement and a new enthusiastic energy for what’s to come,” said Powell. “With Albatross, we focus on making fun, eclectic comics that stand out for their individuality and creative quality, as seen in our lineup of titles like HILLBILLY, SPOOK HOUSE, ‘NAMWOLF, GALAKTKON, GRUMBLE and MEGAGHOST. It’s with this idea of keeping the fun in our Funny Books that we are steering this new GOON series. I’m returning to the roots of the series with a heavy emphasis on the weird, twisted humor the book has been known for. The world around us is dark enough right now. I want to make readers laugh and forget their troubles for a little bit. It definitely feels like it’s time for THE GOON.”

For this new run of stories, Powell will be joined on Albatross Funnybooks’ THE GOON by several acclaimed creators.

“Since I am now not just the creator of THE GOON but also the publisher, I need to make sure our readers get their GOON fix on a regular basis. To that end, we’ll be bringing new creators on to the regular series for first time ever,” teased Powell. “You’ll not only be getting GOON books written and drawn by me, but some written and drawn by some of the best talent in the industry! We will be making announcements in the months to come, but, boy, I can’t wait to show off some of the art we have in the works!!! I think this artist might draw Goon and Franky better than me! And just wait until you hear who’s writing a script for me to draw! It’s one of the best daggum creators in the business, ya’ll!”

About Albatross Exploding Funnybooks: Launched in 2002, Albatross Exploding Funnybooks has always been a labor of love for award-winning, Nashville-based cartoonist Eric Powell. The label began as a means to publish Powell’s creator-owned series THE GOON, which mainstream publishers had deemed “too different.” Although THE GOON later found a home and wider audience with Dark Horse Comics, Powell continued to publish, celebrate, and cultivate creator-owned titles through Albatross Exploding Funnybooks, including his all-ages comic CHIMICHANGA and Rebecca Sugar’s PUG DAVIS. In 2016, Powell rededicated himself in earnest to his publishing company, launching his new fantasy series HILLBILLY and other works such as the all-ages horror anthology SPOOK HOUSE, Fabian Rangel Jr. and  Logan Faerber’s weird war tale ’NAMWOLF and Brendon Small’s GALAKTKON.
Eric Powell is a writer and artist who has contributed work on such comics titles as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Hellboy: Weird Tales, Star Wars: Tales, The Incredible Hulk, Black Panther, The Avengers, The Hood, MAD magazine, Devil Dinosaur, Swamp Thing, She-Hulk, The Simpsons, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, Action Comics, and Creepy.
Although he had been eking out a meager living in the comics field since 1995, Eric didn’t find true success until he launched his critically acclaimed dark comedy series The Goon. The Goon was subsequently picked up by Dark Horse Comics and boasts a die-hard cult following.
The author lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

PRAISE FOR THE GOON

The Goon is old-school cool—a great, gurgling gumbo of EC Comics horror, Monty Python wit, and 1930s pulp.”—Entertainment Weekly
A true American original—a delirious medley of strange characters, stranger creatures, wild-ass (and often truly creepy) storytelling, art so excellent and perfectly matched to the tone of his stories as to be flabbergasting, and writing so hilarious that it sometimes comes close to making me pee my pants.”—Frank Darabont, director
“The product of a contentedly demented mind.”—Comic Book Resources
The Goon has earned [Powell] a seat at the table with Kirby, Eisner, Chester Gould, Hal Foster and Al Feldstein.”—Joe Hill (Locke & Key)
“Eric Powell’s great series The Goon deftly combines lowbrow humor with unexpected emotional depth in its ongoing story of a big, not-so-dumb guy who does battle with zombies in a town seemingly dreamt up by Tom Waits.”—The A.V. Club
“Eric Powell has created a sharp, witty little monster comic with a very interesting mystery at its heart. And Eric can draw as well as anyone in the business. When zombies are overrunning the city, there’s only one man tough enough to keep the undead in line: Eric Powell’s THE GOON.”—Jeff Smith (creator of Bone)
“Every panel [is] gorgeously detailed, like a Max Fleischer cartoon if Cthulhu spat some sort of hellish bile all over it.”—IGN
“There’s a certain joy knowing that a cartoonist of great skill is filling his or her own comic with the elements they love . . . The appeal is how Powell conveys that enthusiasm by drawing every creature and monster so darned well.”—Publishers Weekly
“If this is your first time [reading The Goon], you are in for a treat—if not, you already know how lucky you are.”—David Fincher, director
Tremendously entertaining . . . a highly enjoyable blend of pulp horror and slapstick comedy.”—Fangoria
Bursts with fisticuffs, gore, bad attitude and running character gags . . . Prime ghastly fun.”—Booklist
“A comic for readers who like a generous helping of comedy with their hordes of zombies.”—New York Daily News

“Comicdom’s new hero is a fighting machine with a curious affinity for kicking serious ghoul butt. We hear the Hulk’s green with envy.”—Entertainment Weekly
